National
Stem Cell Centre
Overview
The National Stem Cell Centre (NSCC) is the Australian Commonwealth
Government funded Biotechnology Centre of Excellence.
The NSCC has been awarded a $43.5 million grant to conduct medical
research in the field of stem cells and tissue repair, and to leverage
outcomes from this research to develop products and therapeutics
to treat human disease and injury. The NSCC will focus on both embryonic
and adult stem cell research in conjunction with research in tissue
matrices and immunology. Exemplary products include those based
on matrix products for replacement of tissues, such as skin and
bone, and repair of other damaged or diseased tissues.
Competitive
Advantages
The NSCC will examine multiple aspects of cell based therapies;
including the mobilisation of autologous stem cells, development
of the appropriate environment for stem cell growth and delivery
for applications, and immunological aspects of cell therapy such
as the prevention of transplant rejection. Combining knowledge in
these different aspects of regenerative medicine will provide faster
therapeutic outcomes for patients in need.
Technology
The NSCC technology is aimed toward the generation of cell and
tissue matrix products for replacement or repair of diseased or
damaged tissues, including cardiac tissue for treatment of heart
failure and cardiovascular disease, insulin-secreting beta cells
for the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes, neurons for the
repair of neurodegenerative disorders and spinal cord injuries,
and cell-based therapies for blood disorders.
