Centre
for Plant Conservation Genetics
Overview
The Centre for Plant Conservation Genetics at Southern Cross University
conducts research on the application of molecular techniques to
researching and utilising plant genetic resources. The Centre provides
research and commercial services in plant gene characterisation,
genetic fingerprinting technology and genetic transformation.
Competitive
Advantages
The Centre for Plant Conservation Genetics provides a range of commercial
DNA analysis services, particularly plant genotyping and fingerprinting,
for purposes of genetic purity testing, detecting breaches of intellectual
property rights, and support applications for Plant Breeder’s
Rights and patents.
Technology
A wide range of expertise and facilities exists to service plant
genetics research and development. The Centre employs the most advance
technologies in molecular biology and genetics to address the disciplines
of plant genomics, gene isolation, biodiversity studies, bioprospecting,
plant breeding, tissue culturing and genetic transformation. It
also has a selection of plant genes, genetic material and molecular
markers that constitute biotech marketing opportunities.
The Centre has attracted approximately $30 million in research
funding since it was founded in 1996. This Centre is a leading laboratory
in Australia and internationally in the development of applied plant
genomics projects and genotyping.

Partnering Opportunities
The Centre seeks new collaborative and/or contract research opportunities
with other organisations interested in leading-edge plant genetics,
genomics and biotechnology. In particular synergistic relationships
are sought where each party can provide complementary resources
leading to value-added outcomes as a result of the Centre’s
advanced plant biotechnological research contributions.
