Clinical Cell Culture

section heading graphic   Overview

Clinical Cell Culture Limited is providing innovative tissue engineered products for the reconstruction of skin defects. Our proprietary skin replacement products offer clinicians a range of options for the treatment of burns, previous scarring, cosmetic procedures, chronic wounds and other epidermal trauma.

C3 is building on the basic science research from the McComb Foundation, a not-for-profit research organisation that aims to provide patients and medical professionals with the very best treatment options for skin repair.

C3’s ‘spray on skin’ products include CellSpray®, a 5 to 7 day cultured epithelial autograft cell suspension for use in massive burns and skin defects. CellSpray®XP is a 48-hour harvest autologous cell suspension for moderate skin loss. ReCell® is a rapid, 30-minute, autologous cell harvesting device for use in theatres or hospital clinics to immediately treat small burns and scars, hypopigmentation disorders like vitiligo and prophylactically in cosmetic rejuvenation procedures.

C3 is able to provide culture services from laboratories based in Australia and Europe and is in the process of building a sales and clinical support network globally.

Although the technology to grow cultured epithelial autografts (CEA) has been used since the 1980's, only recently has its potential to treat a wider range of pathologies (such as smoke inhalation, pigmentation disorders and leg ulcers) been realised and effectively utilised. Because the application is autologous (i.e. the original cells used are taken from the actual patient, not a donor), the body accepts these cells as its own, the tissue continues growing, and the healing process is optimal.

Clinical studies have indicated that C3 products will improve healing times and the quality of scars resulting from trauma. Cell suspensions demonstrate superior take and epithelialisation rates.

C3’s products are harvested using a thin biopsy a fraction of the size of donor sites and are available for use in a fraction of the time required with traditional skin culture processes.

Delivered as a suspension, C3’s products are easy to apply, even in high shear and contour areas.

C3’s unique technology enables the stimulation of healthy, living cells taken from a small sample of a patient’s skin so that they expand many times in number. The cells can be grown into a concentrated single cell suspension for application to a wound.

The cell suspension results in the transfer of a large number of cells onto a wound to facilitate wound healing and improved scar outcomes.

CellSpray® and CellSpray®XP allow massive wounds to be treated with cultured cells from C3’s specialist laboratories within days and ReCell® results in a cell suspension that can be applied to smaller wounds immediately in theatre or the out-patient clinic.

C3 is building on the basic science research from the McComb Foundation, a not-for-profit research organisation that aims to provide patients and medical professionals with the very best treatment options for skin repair. The McComb Foundation was established in 1999 to conduct research into tissue engineering. With a growing number of members at the forefront of their fields, the McComb Foundation is well-positioned to conduct leading-edge research into autologous skin replacement technologies and procedures.

The McComb Foundation and C3 share a number of common goals, which include:
Providing patients and medical professionals with the very best techniques for autologous skin replacement, hence ensuring the highest possible standard of patient care.
Encouraging continual education in all levels and in all aspects of burn prevention, burns care and reconstructive techniques.
Successfully commercialising the research and development of the McComb Foundation, to ensure global availability and to generate funds for future research.

C3 has entered into an agreement with Cambrex Bio Science Verviers Sprl, a subsidiary of Cambrex Corporation (USA) for the manufacture of CellSpray® and CellSpray®XP for the European market. Cambrex operate a production laboratory that complied with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements in Belgium. Cambrex is a global, diversified life sciences company dedicated to providing high quality products and services to accelerate drug discovery, development and manufacturing processes for customers focused on health and the prevention of disease.

C3 has also an agreement with Ventrex, Inc. (USA) for some components of manufacturing and the final assembly of ReCell® kits, which will be available for worldwide distribution in 2004. Ventrex has approvals from all major regulatory bodies around the world. It has extensive experience of the manufacture of sterile medical devices under its won brand name and on behalf of other major medical device manufacturers.
